Chinese committed to transforming MG from niche to global brand
Nanjing Automobile Co. purchased the British sports car racing brand MG in 2005, for just £53 million, but despite its more recent acquisition by the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, the MG name remains very much a part of modern Nanjing culture. Now, backed by assets and investment that European and American car manufacturers can only dream of, what used to be a niche with a fan club is on course to becoming a volume manufacturer with global ambitions. Previously, annual sales of MG in the UK numbered only in the hundreds. The company shall launch its MG6 model in the UK and Europe later this year, and rename the 100 year old Longbridge plant as MG Birmingham. SAIC manufacturers MG cars for the China market in Nanjing's Pukou district. [more]
