60 years on, and crew of HMS Concord have a chance at medals for The Yangtze Incident
In 1949, during the Chinese Civil War and what became the famous Yangtze Incident, and a subsequent successful movie, the British frigate HMS Amethyst became grounded while coming under fire sailing up the Yangtze to relieve the guardship protecting the British Embassy in Nanjing. Until now, the British Ministry of Defence has never revealed a fully accurate portrayal of events as it could possibly prove a major breach of Britain's then undertaking not to intervene in the conflict. New uncovered evidence shows that after unsuccessful attempts to assist by three other smaller navy ships, the heavily armed destroyer HMS Concord did make the journey up the river to near Nanjing and aided in the frigate's escape. A campaign is underway in Scotland to fight for the brave servicemen of HMS Concorde to be rightfully awarded their medals, along with those already awarded to crews of the three other ship that attempted the rescue.
