Illicit recycling ringleader nabbed in Nanjing; 500 barrels of waste saved from reaching tap water
At the end of January, Nanjing police received tip-offs of industrial waste being dumped along the banks of the Yangtze river, close to Nanjing. Upon investigation, some of the barrels of chemical waste lay just a few hundred metres from a source of tap water. After a stakeout last several days, the police caught a suspected employee who in turn, led them to detain the leader of the illicit recycling operation in a recent arrest in Nanjing. It is alleged the suspect dumped up to 50 barrels of toxic waste by the river after charging local chemical companies ¥700-800 per ton for their disposal. [more]
