The Nanjing Metro system currently consists of just one line, operating from Maigaoqiao in the north, with major stops at Nanjing Zoo, Zhujiang Lu (for Nanjing 1912), Xin Jie Kou to the Nanjing Olympic Stadium in the south of the city. Its east-west counterpart, Line number 2 has been under construction for some years and is a colossal project running all the way from Tangshan, a small city to the east of Nanjing, outside of the city's ring road, to the banks of the Yangtze river in the west of the city, before turning south and terminating at Wangjiacun. The new Line 2, along with an extension to Line 1, is due to open on 28th May, 2010.
As a footnote, by 2050 Nanjing will have 10 metro lines and 4 light rail lines with a total length of 433 kilometers.
