Frequently asked questions about Nanjing
南京FAQ

Where can I buy decent bread in Nanjing?

A classic question! The best known western style bread shop is the Skyways bakery with three branches on Shanghai Lu, at Taipingmen and in the Yadong Plaza in Qixia district. They also stock cheese, butter, salami, a selection of cakes and chocolates including tiramisu plus they produce what is arguably the best value for money sandwich in the city - made to order while you wait.

There are also a few other good options for bread of the non sweet variety. The major supermarkets which stock western products all offer bread of reasonable quality:- look in Carrefour, Metro, RT Mart and Auchan. The Singapore chain Breadtalk also has a presence in Nanjing with a shop on the 6th floor of the GE International Plaza and another in the Xinjiekou pedestrian area.

In addition there are a few other independent stores such as Roseyard on Shigu Lu in Xinjiekou. Their French baguettes are excellent if a little more expensive, but if you are stuck in Xinjiekou it is the most convenient option.

Finally, and most surprisingly, at the end of August 2009, French baguettes have started appearing in some of the larger local Suguo supermarkets. They are of great taste, not sweet in the slightest and a steal at 2.40 each! Time will tell whether this trend continues as the average Suguo consumer embraces a little more of continental European culture...
