Why is Nanjing's Purple Mountain called Purple Mountain?

A good question since it is obviously not purple and can hardly qualify as a mountain. However, it is said that purple clouds can sometimes be seen hovering in the skies over the mountain. This also explains the naming of Purple Cloud Lake, the popular summertime swimming location situated on the mountain.
