Frequently asked questions about Nanjing
南京FAQ

What is the famous Yangtze River bridge?

The famous Yangtze River Bridge was completed in 1968 after six years of construction, and still stands strong today as a fine example of Chinese engineering. All Chinese people today are understandably proud of the fact it was the first bridge built without foreign assistance and only the second to cross the mighty Yangtze River. A few years previous the first was completed in Wuhan with help from the then friendly Soviet Union. The Nanjing bridge is one of the ‘must-sees’ of any visit to Nanjing for all Chinese and an increasing number of foreigners who have come to appreciate the bridge’s national significance. All day, every day, people can be seen posing for photos with their friends while the Yangtze river continues its majestic flow in the background. The deck of the bridge can be accessed on both the north and south sides of the river via an elevator!

To combat the horrific traffic congestion on the bridge approach roads as of late, on 1st January 2010, buses no longer stop at either of the two stops on the bridge.

The Nanjing bridge (including approach roads) is 6,772 metres in length and was designed to carry 60,000 vehicles per day, as figure that is far far exceeded in today’s traffic conditions! A lot of debate takes place over the future of the bridge with various outrageous suggestions being banded around. Our bet is upon completion of the Nanjing Number 4 bridge in 2012 and the train and rail tunnel link, the old bridge shall be closed for renovation, whereby a third deck shall be added between the existing two decks to carry cars only. Come back here in around five years to see if we are correct!
