Nanjing wins hosting for second Youth Olympics in 2014 [11 Feb. 2010]
In voting by members of the International Olympic Committee in Vancouver just a few hours ago, the people of Nanjing have received the best Chinese new year's present they could hope for. Nanjing beat Poland's Pozan city for the right to host the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics by a margin of 47 to 42. [more]

More schools abroad put focus on educating kids about China [10 Feb. 2010]
Jiangsu province is twinned with the English county of Essex, establishing relationships between the two regions across many sectors of society. Pupils and teachers from Suzhou High School are currently visiting their English counterpart; Colchester County High School for Girls, and are helping to stage China Day, a fun addition to the school curriculum 's increasing study of China's history and culture. Brand new Jiangsu Province Art Museum to stage free exhibition during Spring Festival [10 Feb. 2010]
With its ultra modern architecture, the brand new Jiangsu Province Art Museum shall be opening its doors to the public over the Chinese new year holiday. An exhibition of fine arts shall be staged during Spring Festival, entrance to which shall be free. [more]

Nanjing shipping company sees profits down 99% [10 Feb. 2010]
An affiliate of the state-owned China Changjiang National Shipping (Group), Nanjing Tanker has seen its profits plunge by 99% in 2009. The drop is accredited to declines in freight rates and the general oil shipping market. Nanjing Tanker transports petroleum and chemical products along the Yangtze River and across the coastal area of China. [more]

Suzhou to host 2010 China Open golf championship [09 Feb. 2010]
This year's China Open golf championship shall be played at the Jinji Lake International Golf Club course, Suzhou from 15th to 18th April. Now in its 16th year, it is only the second year in which the championship shall be played as part of the 10 stop OneAsia Tour. The China Open golf championship this year also sees an increase in prize money to US$2.5 million. [more]

Ship sinks in Yangtze river collision; 12 feared dead [09 Feb. 2010]
12 people are missing feared dead as the result of a collision between two vessels on the Yangtze river off Zhangjiegang. Onboard the vessel "Pengxiang 9" that sank in the collision were 14 people, only two of whom were rescued on Monday night. Authorities are continuing their search for the missing. [more]

Drunk lottery winner attempts to buy bride on train [08 Feb. 2010]
When 26 year old Nanjing worker Zhang Yong was unable to buy a house for him and the love of his life should they marry, his girlfriend became betrothed to another. Against all odds, at the end of 2009, Zhang won the lottery. After buying two houses, he put ¥500,000 from his bank into a suitcase and boarded a train to Anhui province, in an attempt to buy back is love. On board the train however, Zhang became drunk and started accosting beautiful girls on board, pushing wads of ¥100 notes into their hands, begging them to marry him. [more]

Giant Spring Festival candles for Suzhou monastery [08 Feb. 2010]
At the thousand year old buddhist Hanshan Temple in Suzhou, monks have been lighting 1.8 metre high candles as part of preparations for the coming Chinese new year celebration. The candles are capable of sustaining themselves for 3 months. [more]

Yangzhou tests out lanterns for Shanghai Expo [06 Feb. 2010]
With just over 80 days until the Shanghai Expo and as we head closer to lantern season in China, Yangzhou city is conducting trial illuminations of gigantic lanterns that are earmarked for decorating the Expo. It is thought that the lanterns will also go on display at the Yuyuan Gardens in Shanghai during Spring Festival. [more]

International brand name ventures to second tier city Nanjing [06 Feb. 2010]
While Nanjing people could never imagine themselves as "second-tier", the larger international brand names have been solely concentrating their efforts on first-tier cities including Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. However, as Nanjing becomes more wealthy; opening more and more luxury shopping malls, so the brands come to fill them. The latest example is Italian brand Bottega Veneta who has opened their first second-tier location in Nanjing in the not so second-tier Orient Shopping Centre. [more]

Jiangsu home for world's largest off-shore wind farm [05 Feb. 2010]
Construction is soon to begin on what will be the world's largest off-shore power station, lying in east central Jiangsu province on the mudflats and shoreline near Dongtai. With 84 3.6MW off-shore wind turbines covering an area of 150 square kilometers, the power station shall be capable of generating 2 billion kWh of electricity per year. [more]

Nanjing confiscates Hong Kong developer's land in Xianlin [05 Feb. 2010]
Hong Kong developer Wharf and the China Merchants Group have lost a site in Nanjing while Chinese authorities stick to their promises to confiscate unpaid for or undeveloped land in a bid to stop companies hoarding sites in order to push up housing prices. The developer paid 1.6 times the asking price, some ¥2.41 billion for the 3.6 million square foot plot in Nanjing's Xianlin district. [more]

Upbeat start to 2010 for Lianyungang Port [05 Feb. 2010]
The eyes of analysts everywhere are now turning to statistics for January as economic indicators for China in 2010. The north eastern Jiangsu city of Lianyungang has reported an impressive growth in sea freight traffic for the first month of the year. Statistics from Lianyungang Port Group Ltd. reveal an increase of 17 percent on January 2009. [more]

Roll up! Roll Up! Apples going for just ¥8800! [04 Feb. 2010]
It is 1.5kg in weight, the size of a volleyball, has a gold Buddha painted on it and costs ¥8800. The apple which was on display in a department store in the Suzhou Industrial Park has already been sold! [more]

Jiangsu expected to spend ¥90 billion on infrastructure in 2010 [04 Feb. 2010]
Jiangsu province's investment in infrastructure projects grew by 14.6% in 2009, and this year shall top ¥90 billion. Key projects include the Taizhou Yangtze River Bridge, the high speed rail link from Beijing to Shanghai and airports in Nanjing, Xuzhou, Wuxi and Nantong. [more]

Wuxi, the new home of baseball in China! [04 Feb. 2010]
Major League Baseball International is to open its very first Development Center in China, in Jiangsu's Wuxi city. The center provides professional baseball training for middle school and high school-aged students within an academic school environment; and builds on Wuxi's reputation as leading the way for the development of baseball in China. The MLBI Development Center is to be located in the Dongbeitang High School in Wuxi's Xishan District and shall open on 23rd September. [more]

China and Japan reach some agreement over war time history - Japan admits 1937 Nanjing Massacre did occur [03 Feb. 2010]
The Institute of Modern History of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the Japan Institute of International Affairs have for the past three years been engaged in joint-history study project. Now, in a report released on 31st January, Japanese commissioners have admitted the 1937-1945 Sino-Japanese war was an "act of aggression" committed by Japan that caused massive damage to the Chinese people. They further admitted that the 1937 Nanjing Massacre did occur and involved "mass killings". [more]

Agricultural Bank of China to loan ¥10 bn to Jiangsu agricultural industries [03 Feb. 2010]
The Council of Agriculture of Jiangsu and the Argricultural Bank of China have signed a strategic cooperation framework that sees the bank provide a three-year credit line of ¥10 billion in addition to various financial services to local Jiangsu enterprises and cooperative organizations as recommended by the council. Changzhou gears up to promote tourism [03 Feb. 2010]
The Changzhou Tourism Promotion Center and Changzhou Chunqiu International Tourism Plaza are two new centres which have opened on the same day in Changzhou. Until now, the city has lagged behind its neighbours in promoting it and its Jiangsu environs to tourists and locals alike. That is set to change as Changzhou establishes a public service platform for tourism, in which six tourism centres shall join efforts to provide a broad range of tourism related services to domestic and foreign tourists. Public snap up 300,000 carp fry to help clean Taihu [02 Feb. 2010]
Now in its second year, a media campaign paid for by local government and private donations has helped sell 300,000 carp fry to residents around Taihu, China's third largest freshwater lake that borders Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. The lake has become algae-plagued in recent years affecting the drinking water of 17 million people. The carp that can each consume 50 kilograms of algae are scheduled to be put into the lake on 23rd February. [more]

Super deep water port on fast track in Nantong [02 Feb. 2010]
Yangkou Harbour in Nantong, Jiangsu, has been under construction since 2003 and once complete shall be a super deep water port 42 sq. km in size that serves as the province's most important sea access. Authorities have now given the go ahead to speed up construction on several key projects including a ¥6bn liquified natural gas terminal and a ¥9bn LNG power station. [more]

People all over the world hang odd things from their car's rear view mirror, but in what must be a first, a man driving in Wuxi was found to have his own IV drip dangling just there! An astonished policeman who pulled the driver over for speeding said he had never seen anything like it in his 20 years on the force. [more]

Fossil in Nanjing proves the colour of dinosaurs [01 Feb. 2010]
Previously, it was left to Hollywood to decide the colour of dinosaurs. Now, the first solid proof of pigmentation has been found in the fossils of a dinosaur in the Nanjing Institute. The small meat eater named Sinosauropteryx is... reddish-orange! [more]

Italian light show in Xuanwu Lake Park to last until 18th March [01 Feb. 2010]
The impressive array of Italian light sculpture artworks in Nanjing's Xuanwu Lake Park shall last from 30th January until 18th March, 2010. Many of the 75 exhibits, which can each include as many as half a million LEDs, take famous Italian structures for their subject matter. [more]

New laws in China hope to curb senseless deaths over eviction [01 Feb. 2010]
In an issue regarded as the biggest source of unrest in the country, China has moved to block illegal land grabbing and forced evictions by drafting new land laws that ensure the State gives home-owners market-price compensation for their land. The law was revealed on Friday while on the same day, in another hight profile case, a 68 year old man in Jiangsu died after he set himself on fire in protest over police questioning on the issue of their relocation. Online rumour of major earthquake to hit Jiangsu denied [31 Jan. 2010]
Jiangsu is no stranger to earthquakes with on average two relatively minor quakes occurring every year. However, now an online rumour is spreading that suggests the province may be soon hit by a major earthquake, a rumour that is denied by the Jiangsu Seismological Bureau. Elsewhere, a 4.8 magnitude quake has occurred in Shanxi Province in the last week, just three days after similar online gossip and denials by local seismological officials. [more]

Tigers in Changzhou maul yak to death [30 Jan. 2010]
A yak making a bid for freedom has been devoured by tigers at an animal park in Changzhou. The creature had escaped its breeding area and entered the tigers' enclosure by accident, but despite leaping into a pool for cover, it could not escape its grisly fate. [more]

First office abroad for Gwinnett to be located in Wuxi [30 Jan. 2010]
The county of Gwinnett, in the US state of Georgia, has announced its first economic development office abroad, to be located in Wuxi. The statement comes as Gwinnett Chamber's economic development team conducts its pre-trip for the upcoming inaugural Gwinnett Global Business Mission to China in April. [more]

Wuxi art gallery becomes famous for its bad English [30 Jan. 2010]
Signs with amusing English translations are commonplace in China, and in one extreme case in Wuxi city an art gallery has recently achieved overnight fame on the internet for its entrance sign. Literally translated as "Enter the mouth", the sign is just one of many at the gallery that has led to speculation that an online translation tool was the only English language consultant employed. Fly Nanjing to London and Moscow from 28th March [30 Jan. 2010]
China Eastern Airlines has announced two new international flights from Nanjing Lukou airport. Beginning 28th March, a thrice weekly flight shall operate from Nanjing to Moscow via Shanghai, while on the remaining four days of the week the aircraft shall fly from Nanjing to London via Shanghai. Grave robbers ransack recently unearthed tombs outside of Nanjing [28 Jan. 2010]
In what is the first of its kind and the most destructive in the country, tomb raiders using bulldozers on Monday targeted more than 10 ancient tomb sites located in Gucheng town, Gaochun county, Nanjing, adjacent to the construction site of an expressway. The attacks come after the as yet unauthenticated discovery of Cao Cao's tomb in Anyang in Henan province that has led to a renewed interest in archaeology across China. [more]

Foreigners get first glimpse of China's inner political machinations [28 Jan. 2010]
For the first time, a group of select foreigners were Tuesday invited to attend the opening of the third session of the 11th People's Congress of Jiangsu province. It is hoped that such activities may help international investors to gain a better understanding of the Chinese political mechanism. Foreign guests included the general manager of IVECO in China and the deputy principal officer of the United States Consulate General in Shanghai. [more]

Free opera classes open in Yangzhou [28 Jan. 2010]
In efforts to promote the preservation of ancient operatic styles, the government of Yangzhou in Jiangsu province has announced free classes for people interested in learning the Yangju style of opera. [more]

Jiangsu first to increase minimum wage on 1st February [27 Jan. 2010]
In what will be a nationwide increase of salaries, Jiangsu province shall raise the minumum wage to ¥960 from the present ¥850, beginning 1st February. The move shall bring the province on a par with neighbouring Hangzhou and Shanghai. The regions of Beijing, Chongqing and Dongguan are likely to be next to follow suit. [more]

Home of silk to finally get museum [27 Jan. 2010]
Suzhou is well known as the home of silk all over the world, having been a hub for its production since ancient times. Now, Suzhou University and the Suzhou Development Zone are joining forces to construct the Suzhou Museum of Silk, which shall be located on the banks of the Grand Canal. [more]

Jiangsu province reports highest GDP growth in the world [27 Jan. 2010]
The GDP volume of Jiangsu grew by 12.4 percent in 2009, making it not only the province with the highest growth rate, but also the highest in China; ahead of Shanghai with an increase of 8.2% and Beijing's 10.1%. [more]

China holds true to promise to revive great British brand [26 Jan. 2010]
The famous MG brand of sports car was acquired by Nanjing Automobile in 2005, but after the merger of the auto firm with larger Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) in 2007, it looked doubtful that cars would once again roll off the production line in Longbridge, Birmingham. However, now SAIC has announced that assembly of the new MG6 saloon shall begin in England by the end of this year. [more]

Tourism Day poll in question with 4.2 billion votes cast [25 Jan. 2010]
An online poll soliciting public opinion on the naming of a date for "National Tourism Day" has come under scrutiny for receiving 4.2 billion votes cast, an average of 12 votes for each internet user in China. Speculation is therefore rife that local governments are casting fake votes by the million in order to win a date favourable to their locality. Among those accused of fabricating votes is the city of Wuxi in Jiangsu province, which would greatly benefit from tourism revenue should the date be chosen as 29th March, the date Wuxi born Xu Xiake of the Ming Dynasty started his travels. Jiangsu first in China to regulate charity [25 Jan. 2010]
The Jiangsu Charity Promotion Act shall take effect on 1st May and is the first local regulation to be drafted in China. The act covers rules on charitable organisations, donations, trusts and volunteer services; and demands that charities should make public their expenses and salaries on an annual basis. [more]

NUPT rolls out 'intelligent campus' [25 Jan. 2010]
The Nanjing University of Post and Telecommunications, with help from Motorola, has deployed the largest and most resilient campus wireless network of any higher education institution in China. The university's Dr. Zong Ping said the network "opens a new era of awareness for collaboration and sharing within the community." [more]

Guadalajara withdraws from 2014 Youth Olympics bid [24 Jan. 2010]
Nanjing has been left as one of only two candidates to host the second Youth Olympics in 2014 following the withdrawing Saturday of the Mexican city of Guadalajara. The city cites tight finances and a need to concentrate efforts on its hosting of the 2011 Pan American Games as reasons for its abandoning of the bid. The International Olympic Committee shall announce its decision on 10th February while the inaugural Youth Games shall be held this year in Singapore from 14th to 26th August. [more]

Nanjing military committed to assisting Haiti [24 Jan. 2010]
China continues to join the international effort to provide aid and emergency assistance to earthquake struck Haiti. More than half of the 77 strong team was assembled from the Nanjing Miliary Region that also includes four peacekeepers from the Ministry of Public Security and 20 tons of medical equipment and relief supplies. The China Eastern Airlines Airbus A340 departed from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport on Saturday, and shall return with a rescue team currently working in Haiti plus 50 Chinese nationals. [more]

Laba Festival observed in Nanjing and all over China [23 Jan. 2010]
Although a relatively unknown festival to foreigners, this year the Laba Festival in China fell on 22nd January. Originally a celebration of the new harvest but now regarded as the festival of enlightenment, observers drink porridge, cooked with fresh paddy rice, dried fruits and nuts. [more]

"Nanjing! Nanjing!" set to win at Asian Film Awards [22 Jan. 2010]
Lu Chuan's "Nanjing! Nanjing" leads the nominations announced on 20th January for the 4th Asian Film Awards. The film shall be up against entries from Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, South Korea and Japan in the award ceremony to be held on 22nd March. The film, also known as "City of Life and Death", was recently again mired in controversy after being withdrawn from the Palm Springs International Film Festival earlier this month for possible political reasons. Suguo sales' surge 10% in 2009 [22 Jan. 2010]
As China reports a growth rate of 8.7% for 2009; nearer to home, giant Nanjing retailer Suguo has announced its sales increased last year by 10%. As a result, the company pledges to stick to its policy of "no layoffs, no salary reduction" and go ahead with plans to expand operations to Jiangxi and Hubei provinces. Suguo operates 1,900 stores employing 50,000 staff. [more]

Ex Hong Kong cop caught smuggling ammunition into Jiangsu [21 Jan. 2010]
The Huai'an Municipal Intermediate People's Court has jalied for seven years a former policeman from Hong Kong for smuggling ammunition through the postal system to a client in Huai'an city, Jiangsu province. Dennie Ho Kit Keung, 54, had mailed 974 air gun pellets, 67 military bullets, 63 military cartridge cases, five blank cartridges, and three packets of gunpowder to a man surnamed Wang during 2006 and 2007. Nanorobot brings us closer to new Industrial Revolution [20 Jan. 2010]
A scientist from New York University along with collaborators at Nanjing University has succeeded in building a two-armed nanorobotic device with the ability to place specific atoms and molecules where scientists want them. NYU professor of chemistry Dr. Nadrian Seeman's device is approximately 150 x 50 x 8 nanometers in size, meaning that over a million could fit in a single red blood cell. [more]

Foreigner wins Jiangsu TV's version of X-Factor [20 Jan. 2010]
She is only 19, comes from Gloucestershire in Britain, and came to China for one year as an exchange student. Now, Mary-Jess Leaverland has beaten out the local competition to win Jiangsu TV's "Min Xing Chang Fan Tian" ("I want to sing to the stars") talent show, the equivalent of X Factor or American Idol. Miss Leaverland takes home prize money of ¥30,000, a trophy and a CD recording of herself, but no recording contract. [more]

On the table: Ford may quit Nanjing [18 Jan. 2010]
The trio Chang'an Auto, Ford and Mazda are in discussions over changes in the structure of their joint venture that could see Ford move its entire production operation in China to Chongqing. The move is partially driven by Ford's need to raise capital by reducing its shareholding in the joint venture to 13% from 33%. It is already confirmed that Mazda shall move production of the Mazda 3 from Chongqing to the Nanjing plant by the middle of this year, fueling speculation that the deal is merely awaiting approval from the Beijing authorities. Corrupt officials become authors behind bars [18 Jan. 2010]
Zhou Jiugeng, the former Nanjing official known for expensive cigarettes and cars, sentenced to 11 years in jail for corruption, has already completed 300,000 words of a novel about bureaucracy. He joins other such corrupt officials across the country, who have been churning out books on literature, military leaders and even calligraphic works. There are many who remain sceptical, questioning the quality of the work, motives and cases of obvious favourtism. One jailed official in Hubei province received a 3.5 year reduction in his 15 year sentence after writing 4 books and making a "special contribution to society". A flood of outcry and protest immediately followed on the internet. [more]

Nanjing Forestry University still can't see the wood for the... kissing [16 Jan. 2010]
Two months ago, Nanjing Forestry University issued a public ban on public displays of affection and employed the services of Red Armband student guards to patrol the university grounds. Now, despite a heated debate on and off line that shows no sign of abating, university officials decline to make public comment but unofficially stand by the institution's right to restrict student behavior on campus. Students, netizens and even lawyers are speaking out, the latter stating the ban does not infringe on people's rights. [more]

Nanjing and London publishers team up with art director of The Who [16 Jan. 2010]
Designed and illustrated by Richard Evans, art director for legendary British rock band The Who, "Symbols of China" is a new book published by Nanjing based Yilin Press and London's Compendium Publishing that attempts to show westerners there is more to Chinese symbolism than tattoos on footballers' arms. Charity begins at school; Huai'an teachers coerced into donations [15 Jan. 2010]
An unnamed charity fund is where up to a quarter of their salaries are being paid, claim teachers and government employees in Huai'an city, central Jiangsu province. They allege they are 'forced' to make the donations; accusations that are denied by a government spokeswoman. [more]

Nanjing graduate student wins $20,000 to continue research in Canada [15 Jan. 2010]
Following the dream of many young people, upon her graduation from Nanjing University in 2004, Qiao Yun moved to Toronto to continue her studies. After acquiring her M.A. in Applied Mathematics she was keen to specialize in numerical analysis in finance and submitted her research proposal. Ms. Qiao is the second recipient of the $20,000 prize in the annual BMO Capital Markets Advanced Research Scholarship. [more]

Annular eclipse to pass through Jiangsu on Friday afternoon [14 Jan. 2010]
An annular eclipse, in which the moon passes directly in front of the sun but leaves a ring of light encircling its shadow shall travel across Jiangsu province and large areas of China on the afternoon of Friday 15th January, 2010. The northern Jiangsu cities of Xuzhou and Suqian shall experience a totality 7 minutes in duration. It is expected to be the longest annularity of the next 1,000 years. [more]

New Feng Shui shop in Nanjing accused of "superstitious activities" [13 Jan. 2010]
Zhujiang Lu in Nanjing, or computer street as it is sometimes known, is hardly the place one expects to find a Feng Shui shop However the large store, newly opened by a young girl; accounting graduate Xin Jingjing, is not without controversy as calls have been made to local police claiming the business is engaged in unlawful superstitious activities. Nanjing and Chengdu Volkswagen plants set for 4 billion Euro upgrade [12 Jan. 2010]
It has been the biggest auto maker in China for 20 years, and in 2009 posted another impressive growth rate of 36.7%. Moving ahead, Volkswagen plans to double its annual sales to 2 million over the next decade, and to meet this aim shall invest 4 billion Euros in expanding production capacity at its plants in Nanjing and Chengdu over the next three years. The automaker recording the highest growth rate in 2009 in China was Skoda, at over 50%. [more]

Killer buys Carrefour knife; caught on camera at cash machine [11 Jan. 2010]
Sercurity cameras at a Bank of China ATM and a Carrefour store in Yangzhou have helped find the perpetrator in what turned out to be a fatal robbery. Chen Wei, 27, is accused of stabbing his victim at the cash machine before taking a purse containing ¥2000. [more]

Nanjing firm favourite to win 2014 Youth Olympics [10 Jan. 2010]
According to the International Olympic Committee, Nanjing presents the least risk of the three candidates to host the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2014. The city's US$117 million budget is almost double that of its competitors; Guadalajara, Mexico, and Poznan, Poland. IOC members shall vote for the host city on Feb. 10 in Vancouver ahead of the 2010 Winter Olympics. [more]

Chinese film-makers persuaded to withdraw from Palm Springs International Film Festival [10 Jan. 2010]
On the festival program for this year; a documentary about Tibet and the Dalai Lama. Not on the program; "Nanjing Nanjing" and another less prominent new Chinese film. State officials told the Palm Springs festival’s director that the filmmakers themselves had decided to withdraw their state-financed works. The case is highlighting a sensitive issue whereby big movie studios, all cogs in the wheels of international corporate conglomerates, have in recent years seemed to have avoid major projects on Tibet. Green light for waste-to-energy facility in Changzhou [06 Jan. 2010]
After successfully establishing a WTE (waste-to-energy) development project in the Ukraine, Swedish company EcoEnergy has now signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Changzhou Xinbei District Government and Jiangsu Guoyu Electric Co Ltd. to build a joint venture WTE facility in Changzhou's Xinbei District. An on-site feasibility study for the project shall first be conducted. [more]

Nanjng to Shanghai in 75 minutes by July [05 Jan. 2010]
As part of commitments to provide faster access to the Shanghai Expo from neighbouring provinces, the Shanghai Railway Bureau has announced high speed services to Nanjing shall commence by July, cutting journey time to 75 minutes from the current 90 minutes. New trains to Hangzhou shall also commence in October with a travel time of just 38 minutes. Both services shall terminate at the new Shanghai Hongqiao Railway station. [more]

Wuxi unveils China's first Smartcard ID system [04 Jan. 2010]
Similar in appearance to existing social security cards, a new so called "smart citizen card" has been issued to citizens in Wuxi that can record data such as name, gender, blood type plus healthcare, social security and bank account information. The card is the first of its kind in China. [more]

Jiangsu PV with big showing at World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi [03 Jan. 2010]

Jiangsu reports huge growth in software service outsourcing through 2009 [01 Jan. 2010]
China's service outsourcing industry has not only remained solid through the world financial crisis, but in the case of Dalian and Jiangsu province, has also shown rapid growth. Dalian has been the traditional home of software service outsourcing in China, with sales growing by 33% to ¥33 billion in the first 10 months of 2009. Such strong growth was even surpassed by the industry's newcomer Jiangsu province, which reported a 174% increase for the same period. [more]

Suning takes first steps out of mainland China; buys HK's Citicall [31 Dec. 2009]
The Nanjing firm Suning, one of the country's largest electrical appliance chains, has announced its entry into the Hong Kong market with the purchase of leading consumer electronics retailer Citicall, for HK$35 million. "Riverdance" comes to Nanjing and Suzhou in mid January [30 Dec. 2009]

After the Copenhagen Conference, a European customer placed an order for 5000 units of a hybrid vehicle manufactured by KESM Electric Appliance Technology in Yangzhou, Jiangsu province. The 400 kilogram car can travel 120 kilometers on only a 9 hour charge, and has a retail price from US$6-9000. With its present manufacturing capacity of only 2000 units per year, KESM recognizes the need to find assistance in improving its technology for large scale production. [more]

Parade of brocade at outdoor fashion show in Nanjing [29 Dec. 2009]
Named after cloud-like patterns stitched on the embroidery, Yunjin Brocade dates back over 1500 years to the Southern Song Dynasty and Jiangsu province. Nanjing drunk driving case comes to a close; killer receives only life imprisonment [23 Dec. 2009]
Zhang Mingbao who killed five including a pregnant women and her husband driving his Buick LaCrosse after drinking two bottles of "bai jiu" on 30th June this year has been sentenced to life in prison by the Nanjing Intermediate People's Court. Families of the victims expressed outrage at the sentence and could be heard in the courtroom screaming for a death sentence. [more]

Pukou man takes drunk friend home; deemed liable for death [21 Dec. 2009]
The Pukou District People's Court in Nanjing has ruled compensation in the amount of ¥100,000 be paid to the family of a victim by the very person who escorted him safely home before the victim died of exposure. Mr. Tan is appealing the decision, calling it ridiculous after he performed such a good deep to assist his drunken colleague in returning home, leaving him only 30 metres from the door of his house.
