Wuxi attempts to lure US$40 billion in service outsourcing [17 Nov. 2009]
Due to ongoing pollution problems in Lake Tai as a result its dependence on manufacturing, Wuxi has been undergoing changes to his whole system of economy. Deciding to shift toward a focus on service outsourcing, the city put in place a number of initiatives that has led to it accounting for 39.2% of service outsourcing in Jiangsu last year. By 2020, the industry is expected to attract US$30-40 billion, in the process providing 1 million jobs. [more]
Happy couple departs this world together after 65 years of marriage [16 Nov. 2009]
In a fairy-tale ending that we all would wish to follow, for 65 years Wei Xiuzhen and her husband Li Lingguo shared their entire lives. Having married when they were just 18, and and enjoying a life together spent growing plants, feeding pigs and harvesting grain, the two passed away within a few hours of each other on the same day in Yicheng city, Jiangsu province last Thursday. Taiwan brand street to be built in Nanjing [16 Nov. 2009]
The Nanjing city government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), an important promoter of trade to and from Taiwan. The agreement lays out plans for a Taiwan brand street in Nanjing, whereby locals shall be able to purchase more products from the island state without leaving Nanjing. [more]

Jiangsu all set to buy US$3 billion worth of goods from Taiwan [11 Nov. 2009]
The secretary of the Jiangsu CPC, Liang Baohua, views his trip to the island as "deepening exchanges and cooperation in all areas" between Taiwan and Jiangsu. He stated his province is ready to purchase US$3 billion worth of Taiwanese products as part of a complimentary strategy in which Jiangsu companies shall also be encouraged to set up shop across the straits. Taiwanese investment projects in Jiangsu province already account for over 30% of Taiwan's total investment in the mainland. [more]

Tokyo to donate funds to upgrade Nanjing martial arts facility [09 Nov. 2009]
The "Project for the Improvement of Japan-China Friendship JUDO Hall in Nanjing" is set to receive US$96,400 in grant assistance as part of a cultural and educational exchange program administered by a body associated with the Tokyo Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Nanjing's drunk drivers to be publicly shamed [07 Nov. 2009]
Following in the footsteps of Fuzhou and Wuxi, and after a series of high profile drink related accidents, the city of Nanjing shall publish a list of 106 convicted drunk drivers, defined as drivers who were either fined or jailed for driving while intoxicated. [more]
New green campaign to provide free bikes to tourists in Nanjing [06 Nov. 2009]

The 2009 Nanjing Jazz and World Music Festival shall once again take place in Nanjing, this year from 13th to 17th November. Another eclectic mix of jazz and world music bands from all over the world shall particpate, from countries such as Canada, Belguim, Holland, Germany and the Canary Islands. CDC Global Services in agreement with Nanjing High-Tech Zone to acquire stake in Jiangsu Microsoft [04 Nov. 2009]
Subject to the completion of due diligence, CDC Global Services shall through agreement with Nanjing High-Tech Zone, acquire a 35 percent stake in the Jiangsu Microsoft Technology Center as part of its rapid expansion plans. Jiangsu Microsoft Technology Center, also known as Sowell, is a major Microsoft technology center providing research and development services to Microsoft. [more]
China Eastern Airlines launches direct flight from Nanjing to Nagoya [03 Nov. 2009]
In addition to its Nanjing to Tokyo and Osaka flights, China Eastern Airlines on 28th October launched its latest servce to Japan, from Nanjing to the centrally located city of Nagoya. The flight is expected to see a bump in load capacity next year as an alternative route to access the 2010 Shanghai Expo. [more]
Ford plant in Nanjing contributes to sales of over 500,000 Ford Fiestas [02 Nov. 2009]
The Ford Motor Company is celebrating sales of more than half a million of its popular small sized model, the Ford Fiesta. The Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Company manufacturing facility in Nanjing produces the five-door hatchback and four-door sedan versions of the Fiesta, which enjoyed a tremendously successful launch in Europe before being rolled out in South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and China. The Fiesta is alo manufactured at two other locations globally; Ford’s Cologne Assembly Plant in Germany and the Valencia Assembly Plant in Spain. [more]
Weather rocket falls to earth on Nanjing Pukou resident's home [02 Nov. 2009]
Bearing the words 'artificial rainfall rocket' and approximately one metre in length, the device fell back to earth by parachute around 2am on 1st November. After a long period of drought and difficult shipping conditions on the Yangtze river, it is widely speculated that the heavy rainfall of the night of 31st October was the result of four cloudseeding rocket launches similar to this that landed on the Pukou resident's home. The Nanjing Bureau of Meteorology has positively identified the wreckage of the rocket. [more]
Yangtze river levels drop to lowest level in decades [31 Oct. 2009]
The end of October, 2009 and the mighty Yangtze river around Nanjing saw its water levels drop to their lowest level in 30 years, exposing large swaithes of river bed and forcing cargo ships to sail up and down the river only half laiden. [photos]
Electric double decker buses to be produced in Nanjing [30 Oct.. 2009]
China's major bus manufacturer, the Zonda Group and the Qingshan Energy Research Institute have shall provide Nanjing with 1,500 new jobs in realising the production of electric buses, as part of China's commitment to the zero-emission target of the urban public transportation system. [more]

Nanjing University among proposed Ivy League of universities in China [26 Nov. 2009]
It is to be called the C9; nine of China's most prestigious universities coming together to allow flexible student exchange programs, deeper cooperation in the training of postgraduates and the establishing of a credit system that allows students to win credits through attending classes in other member universities of C9. It is also hoped the C9 shall enhance cooperation and exchanges between Chinese universities and their foreign counterparts. [more]
Nanjing nets ¥3.2 billion from tourism during National Day holiday [22 Oct. 2009]
The National Day holiday in 2009 brought over 4 million tourists from China and abroad to Nanjing, with each visitor spending an average of approxiamtely ¥800 during their stay. The most popular destination was the Confucious Temple followed by Sun Yatsen's mausoleum and the Xuanwu lake. [more]
